Moodle Tiles course format

Course tiles that match your theme.

Tiles (format_tiles) displays course sections as a grid. Students open a tile to view its activities. RoseaThemes styles the tiles and their contents to match the colours, fonts, and layout of your Moodle or IOMAD site.

Moodle 5.2: Tiles currently has compatibility issues with Moodle 5.2 caused by bugs in the Tiles plugin, not in RoseaThemes themes. Always check the supported Moodle versions on Moodle Marketplace before installing Tiles or upgrading Moodle.

Students can check their progress on each section tile. Tiles and activities use IOMAD Moon’s course styling.

What the theme styles

The theme includes styles for Tiles and applies them automatically when you select the format for a course.

  • Tile grid

    Tiles, icons, and section titles match the cards and colours used elsewhere in your course.

  • Sections and activities

    The toolbar above the grid and the activities inside each section use the theme’s course layout.

  • Progress and availability

    Progress indicators and access restriction messages use the theme’s fonts and status colours.

  • Dark mode and right-to-left languages

    Tiles follows your theme’s dark mode and right-to-left layout where these are supported.

The following themes include styling for Tiles. Check each theme’s page for supported Moodle or IOMAD versions, and check the Tiles plugin’s compatibility separately.

How to start using Tiles

Before you install, check the supported Moodle versions on Moodle Marketplace and choose a Tiles release that supports your Moodle version.

Tiles is a separate plugin and isn’t included with your theme. Install Tiles from the Moodle plugins directory, then choose Tiles as the format in your course settings. Your theme’s styling applies automatically.
